Basketball is hugely popular in the Philippines, and many fans want to know how odds work before they ever place a bet. This page covers the three main markets, the two ways odds are written, and the arithmetic that shows what a price really means. The rules are the same for PBA and NBA games; league-specific points are in the PBA guide and the NBA guide.
The three main markets at a glance
| Market | What you pick | Does the margin of victory matter? | Can it tie (push)? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Moneyline | Which team wins (overtime counts) | No | No: basketball has no draw |
| Point spread (handicap) | A team to win by more than, or lose by less than, a number of points | Yes | Only on a whole-number line |
| Total (over/under) | Whether combined points finish above or below a line | Only the combined score | Only on a whole-number line |
Moneyline: pick the winner
A moneyline bet is the simplest market. Overtime counts, and there is no draw. With decimal odds, a lower number is the favourite: for example (invented) Team A 1.50 and Team B 2.60.
Decimal and American odds
| Style | Favourite | Underdog | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Decimal (common in Asia and Europe) | 1.67 | 2.30 | Total return per 1 staked, including the stake |
| American | -150 | +130 | -150: stake 150 to win 100; +130: stake 100 to win 130 |
Converting American to decimal (invented): -150 → 1 + 100/150 = 1.67; +130 → 1 + 130/100 = 2.30.
A favourite at short odds still loses sometimes, so do not stake money you cannot afford to lose.
Point spread: the handicap
A point spread gives the weaker team a head start so a bet on either side is closer to a coin flip. Invented example: Team A -6.5, Team B +6.5.
| Final score | Bet on A (-6.5) | Bet on B (+6.5) |
|---|---|---|
| A wins by 10 | Wins | Loses |
| A wins by 7 | Wins | Loses |
| A wins by 6 | Loses | Wins |
| B wins | Loses | Wins |
The half point means no tie. On a whole-number line such as -7, winning by exactly 7 is a push, usually a refund; confirm in the operator's rules.
Common mistakes:
- Thinking the favourite "winning" is enough: with a spread, the margin matters.
- Ignoring the price. Spread bets still carry the bookmaker's margin (see below).
- Chasing losses after a late "backdoor cover" in garbage time.
Total (over/under): combined points
A total ignores who wins and looks only at combined points. Invented line: 210.5. Final score 108-105 = 213, so over wins. Final score 100-104 = 204, so under wins.
| Situation (invented line 210.5 unless noted) | Usual result | What to check in the rules |
|---|---|---|
| Final 108-105 (213) | Over wins | Whether overtime points count |
| Final 100-104 (204) | Under wins | Same |
| Line 210 (whole number), final 110-100 | Push, stake returned | Whether the operator voids or uses a half-point line |
| Game postponed or abandoned | Often voided; rules differ | The postponement and minimum-play rule |
| Game goes to overtime | Many operators include overtime in game totals | A separate "regulation only" market may exist |
Bookmakers set the line from pace, injuries and recent scoring, then adjust it as bets arrive. A line is an opinion with a margin built in, not a prediction you can rely on. Treating "it always goes over" streaks as a system is a common mistake.
What a price really means: implied probability
Odds look random until you turn them into percentages. The arithmetic is the same for every market above.
Step 1: implied probability = 1 ÷ decimal odds. Invented moneyline: Team A 1.50, Team B 2.60.
- Team A: 1 ÷ 1.50 = 0.667, so 66.7%.
- Team B: 1 ÷ 2.60 = 0.385, so 38.5%.
Step 2: add them up. 0.667 + 0.385 = 1.051, about 105.1%. A fair two-way market would total 100%. The extra ~5 points are the bookmaker's built-in margin (the "vig" or "juice"). The same check on the American-odds example above: 1.67 implies about 60%, 2.30 about 43%, together about 103%.
Step 3: what it costs you. Totals and spreads usually carry a price on each side, for example 1.91 and 1.91 (invented). Each side implies 1 ÷ 1.91 = 52.4%, so the two add to 104.7%. To break even at 1.91 you must win about 52.4% of the time, not 50%. Over 100 bets of ₱100 at that price, a bettor who wins exactly half collects 50 × ₱191 = ₱9,550 against ₱10,000 staked: a ₱450 loss with no bad luck at all. A run of 55 wins in 100 would be ahead, but that is within ordinary luck and does not show a system.
What follows for you:
- To break even at odds of 2.60 you need to win more than 38.5% of the time on that kind of bet.
- A tip that "feels" 60% likely is only worth anything if the odds imply less than 60%. Feelings and favourite teams are not edges.
- Longer losing streaks than you expect are normal. Never raise stakes to chase them.
Props and live betting
Player props (a player's points, rebounds or assists) and in-game betting move quickly. Props can change on injury news, so read what happens to a bet if a player does not play. Live prices change every few seconds, which makes it easy to overspend, so decide your limit beforehand.
Check the sportsbook first
Only consider an operator you can verify. PAGCOR's Guarantee site lists authorised online gaming websites and can be filtered by category, including sports betting. Match the exact address, as explained in how to check a PAGCOR licence, or paste it into our licence checker. Livestream "betting rooms" on social media are a red flag; see scam signs. Frequently asked questions
What is a moneyline bet?
You pick which team wins the game outright; the margin does not matter. Overtime counts, and basketball has no draw, so there are two outcomes.
What does a point spread of -6.5 mean?
The team must win by 7 or more points for a spread bet on it to win. A bet on the other side (+6.5) wins if that team wins or loses by 6 or fewer. The numbers in our examples are invented.
What does over/under 210.5 mean?
You bet on whether both teams' combined points finish above (over) or below (under) 210.5. With a half point there is no push. Operators usually include overtime in game totals, but rules differ, so read the market rules.
What do -150 and +130 mean?
In American odds, -150 means you stake 150 to win 100 profit (the favourite). +130 means a 100 stake wins 130 profit (the underdog). Decimal equivalents are about 1.67 and 2.30.
How do I convert decimal odds to implied probability?
Divide 1 by the decimal odds. Odds of 2.00 imply 1 / 2.00 = 50%. When the implied probabilities of all outcomes add up to more than 100%, the extra is the bookmaker's built-in margin.
What is a push?
On a whole-number line, such as a -7 spread or a total of 210, landing exactly on the line is a push: the stake is normally returned. Half-point lines avoid pushes. Check the operator's rules.
How do I check a sportsbook is PAGCOR-authorised?
Open pagcorguarantee.ph, filter by Sports Betting, and match the exact website address. PAGCOR launched the site on 18 June 2025 so players can verify licensed platforms.
